We let inhibitions take the form of bottle corks
And headed for nowhere at all
Eternal walk
The last of our warnings
Scrawled as messages encased in bottles,
floating amongst poison.
Thrown away.

Up to the new road,
Scrape the sand from between our toes.
We walked a mile without words or landscape.
Clothes sting on skin
How is it August here again?
I'd give my last breath for some wind.
But I'm not walking back there

We woke up to mornings neither of us thought deserved.
As an encouraging wind dries both our bodies,
We let our apologies unfold
Like origami in reverse.
Dismantle a machine devoid of a function,
Neither of us understand.

I wonder if the notes we bottled are remotely helpful..
Will they ever be found?..

We followed salubrious air
To a familiar sight that night,
Broken bottles make the shores line
And the wind wheezed a confetti
Of ink streaked scraps- I catch a few
But they are illegible blotches
And so are we.

I wonder if we'd corked those bottles
We'd have read those warnings
Would it make a difference?

Encroaching on our 30th year in this place
Those inhibitions evaporate
We feel them tight round our necks
More of a scar than a scarf
I catch a reflection in a shard of bottle
Our eyes are as blue as the sea we'll one day be within
We've always hated beaches
I say "oh! is this just where we don't want to be?"
You say "why do you keep on saying 'we', I don't know who you are!
Looking out to actual air I hear a David Berman song
Register what you just said and say "you WHAT?!"
I turn back to the beach,
I'm underwhelmed with what I have.
Horizons weep with opportunity somewhere.
I contemplate adventure
Better leave my future self a message,
so I know why I left here
I start rebuilding back those bottles
to a shape that I can soon call vessels for all the warnings
I'll be disappointed consistently no matter what
The corks are loose but they'll do
A final look then I'll set off
Are you coming too?
